We would like to introduce you to the new owners of Fraga Farm. Elisabeth "Lis" and Steve Monahan are a husband and wife team‚ who share our dream‚ which began in 1993‚ to provide a superior cheese‚ made from high quality‚ organic milk produced from our herd of Alpine and Nubian goats. Like us‚ Steve and Lis consider the goats to be the most important part of the business and will treat them with respect and loving care. They will continue our tradition of farming organically.
Lis and Steve live with their three children on their 34 acre farm in Gales Creek, about 30 miles from Portland. Their farm was once home to a cow dairy and has a wonderful old red dairy barn. Lis‚ like Jan‚ was raised on a farm and like Jan‚ she’s always loved goats. One of the first things she and Steve did was to buy a few goats and soon‚ Steve‚ the chef in the family‚ began experimenting with "stove-top" cheese recipes.
Lis and Steve began researching and visiting farmstead dairies. When they visited our small 4-acre farm‚ originally to look at our equipment and possibly buy our herd‚ she realized that pursuing their dream was possible. And we realized that we had found someone who could preserve the Fraga Farm name and legacy and continue to grow the business sustainably.
While Lis and Steve refurbish the dairy barn and build a new creamery on the farm‚ the goats will stay at Sweet Home‚ and we will continue to produce our cheese in Sweet Home while we teach Lis and Steve the art of cheese making and farmsteading. The four of us are excited to be working together toward the transition from Sweet Home to Gales Creek.
